BPS The Early Years, 1948-1953, by Arthur Ingram and Gordon Mustoe, charts in detail the conception and creation of British Road Services which came into being on 1July 1948 under the post-War Labour Government's nationalisation programme.

As the authors point out in their preface, this is such a vast subject that it would take several volumes to do it justice, so this book concentrates on the early years and the industries and companies that came together to create BRS.

There are some excellent photos from before and after nationalisation, including a Covent Garden scene in 1952 and road hauliers pictured presenting a petition against Government interference at the House of Commons in 1947, when hats, coats and pipes were very much the order of the day. This is a genuinely informative and absorbing journey into the annals of road haulage history. BAS The Early Years, 1948-1953 is a Roundoak Book available direct from Nynehead Books for £22.60.
