Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Si Castle Cement is converting 85 of its ERP tractors to three axles and plating them at 41 tonnes— this will Out its VED bill by more than 1200,000 a year. Sellers and Batty of Peterborough is converting the tractors on line at ERF's Sandbach plant; it is also handling the re-plating and retaxing at 22,590—less than half the old rate.

Air-suspended, mid-lift axles in non and self-steer variations are being fitted at a cost from .£5,550 (ex-VAT) per vehicle.

With an unladen weight of 7,880kg they now offer a 27.5 tonne payload—up by well over two tonnes compared with a 38-tonner. Castle reports only a minimal increase in fuel consumption.

• Esso is also moving up to 41 tonnes with 27 P1141.A6x2/4NA twin-steer Scanias. The company is opting for 340hp rather than the 360hp variants used elsewhere in the fleet; to make up for this they are fitted with Scania's 12-speed GRS900 box using two crawler gears.

The Scanias qualify for the Government's reduced pollution £1,000 VED rebate.
