Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Thousands of Department of Transport officials are being balloted for a one-day strike at the end of the month in protest at the Government's plans for market testing and changed redundancy terms.

The 6,500 officials work in Traffic Area Offices, the Transport Research Laboratory Driving Standards Agency, the Vehicle Inspectorate, the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency and Vehicle Registration Offices around the country In the next two weeks they will be voting whether to strike on 30 July—the clay before the new Lregistration plates are introduced.

Civil and Public Servants Association national officer Andrew Fisher says changes to the redundancy agreement from the beginning of next year mean the DOT is abolishing its last.in, first-out" principle which means line managers will be able to decide who to make redundant.

He adds that the CPSA is taking advice on whether the DOT can legally make such unilateral changes to redundancy terms.

The DOT has declined to comment on the dispute.
