THE TRTA practice of calling itself: "the official body representing the interest of the operators of the 1+ million goods vehicles used by trade and industry to carry their own goods" is quite fair, because that is just what it sets out to do. But at the Association's "roads" press conference on Monday it was a bit hoist with this one, as I knew it would be one day. A pressman asked if it would be fair to say that the TRTA roads survey had been compiled by the operators and drivers of over a million vehicles. After a sharp indrawing of breath by the platform party, national secretary Hugh Featherstone said no, that wouldn't really be a valid assumption. Pressed just a little, he said that 300,000 would be a more accurate figure. which is, I think, the first time in recent years that I've seen a figure given for the TRTA's vehicle strength among membership.
