THE Treasury this week gave a cool reception
to a suggestion that vehicles might be taxed and insured by a tax on fuel sales. Mr. Ben Whitaker (Labour, Hampstead) who put forward the idea claimed it would save evasion, save the time of civil servants and would fairly allocate the burden in proportion to those who drove.
