Lombard puts more than 40,000 cars and light commercials on the road annually through several routes of finance. These vary from contract hire and hire purchase to more varied options such as sale and leaseback, and operating lease.

Vehicles returning to the company adhere to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association's (BVRLA) fair wear and tear guide, and each month Lombard holds a sale at Manheim Auctions, Haydock, offering more than 200 vans.

These are multi-make entries and come from blue-chip businesses including British Gas, Roadside Assistance and utility companies. Lombard centre manager and auction controller Graham Coles attends about 10 sales a month where Lombard vehicles are up to auction approving prices and assessing provisional bids.

The week CM caught up with Coles he had been to Bedford the previous day, before landing at Haydock. He works closely with the day's auctioneers, John Harland and Andy Conde, before setting off for Newport the following day, and then Colchester the day after.

As CM went to press, Lombard secured 70%

conversion from the 200 vans available. In Janua Lombard is holding two sales and will go to two sales a month permanently in September 2009. "We remaket 2,500 cars and commercials every month. Of that, 600 are commercials and we auction 60% of those," he says.

In the current climate, he says Lombard Is coping well. "We are ahead of the market because of the way we do things," he adds, "We have built a following."
