Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Motor!s. Used Truck Tests have taken on even greater significance; last year brought us a steady mix of new and established trucks.

The most recent addition to the used market is the MAN TG-A.The TG410A mid-lift tractor we tested provided plenty of evidence of a well-rounded motor with plenty to offer a potential new owner. It romped around our test route and. while

the wintry conditions had an effect on the fuel figure, that was the only downside of an otherwise decent drive.

Another new entry to the used market was the Renault Midlum; we got our hands on an ex-rental three-year-old dropsider with 147hp engine. It was clean throughout and a fair reflection of the Midlums starting to infiltrate the used marketplace. The Midlum is building a loyal following on the used market with strong residuals and this Lest helped as understand why.

It was a good year for 7.5-tonners. The Daf LF45 may lack glamour hut it's an unshakable motor with all the functionality that's needed at the sharp end of the delivery sector. We liked it even though the design and appearance isn't exactly 21st century.

The lsuzu NOR 7.5-tonne tipper offers the highest payload in its class which, combined with a dependable driveline and decent fuel consumption, has made it a firm favourite with trade and car transporters in particular. The Robert Fraud vehicle we tried came with a relatively heavy steel body, but its overall performance was still impressive despite a cab that felt a little snug for the larger members of our test team.

Further up the weight range the 18tonne Volvo FL6 is another wellestablished favourite on the used market. The example we drove reinforced its workhorse reputation, but in truth all decent 18-tanners deserve this tag. it worked well round the route and although we mentioned a high price tag there were various packages available with it.

Tippers are always popular and the Foden Alpha A3000 8x4 proved one of the summer's highlights:The 380hp Caterpillar engine isn't the most frugal but it is strong; that's why operators spec it.A solid performer.

We only tested three used tractors in 2003 and the Mercedes-Benz Actros 2548LS was by far the biggest and most impressive. The MegaSpace is much in demand on the second-hand market and we would have been surprised if our test vehicle stayed on the forecourt long.

Scania is one of a few manufacturers that can hold its asking price on a majority of the

models in its range. The R114 4x2 sleeper-cab tractor came in classic fleet spec and delivered a sound performance with an assured fuel return.

The major first of the year, however, came courtesy of Mercedes-Benz which put a van into the used test scheme for the first time. The Sprinter 211 CDI panel van set the standard for future van tests. It was clean, in good condition with low mileage. •
