The average length of haul over which gooc are carried by road has increased from 67k in 1980 to 92km in 2002. The DfT says that during the 1980s goods vehicle traffic grew at the same rate as the economy, but since 1990 freight moved and goods vehicle traff have risen more slowly than gross domestic product (GDP) often referred to as a key "summary indicator" of economic activity ar manufacturing growth. These figures might be misleading because increases in tarmac carried and distance moved have been offs by increased payloads.
