THE CONTROVERSIAL sub, of lead levels in petrol is rently under discussion in European Parliament.

The EP Environment Comr tee, under the chairmanshir Ken Collins (Strathclyde E Socialist), has pointed out I vehicle exhaust fumes can in duce dangerous levels of I' into the blood.

Farming produce is a severely affected by lead vvl situated near motorways main roads, Mr Collins plained.

Although lead levels have dined over the years, the crease in vehicles has nullil the effect.

One suggestion being con: ered by the Committee is make lead-free petrol availa throughout the EEC by 1 Drivers in Japan and the Uni States, where this type of fue already in use, have show' preference for it, the Commii has found.

European motor manufac ers would have to develop r vehicles capable of running lead-free petrol, or else a syst would have to be worked out extracting lead from exha fumes.

The former method we make the vehicle slower in ac leratioon and the engi thirstier, but the Committee lieves this to be a small pric( pay for a cleaner atmosphere.
