THE EEC Commission is taking steps to monitor the flow Of imports of small vans from Japan into the Common Market countries.

In future the statistics will be reported to Brussels on a monthly basis — instead of yearly — so action can be taken quickly if there is a sudden surge in imports.

The import surveillance scheme was introduced last year for Japanese cars and machine tools. Since then there has been a decline in the imports of these products, partly also due to the recession and the strength of the yen.

The decision to add small vans to the list was taken mainly at the request of Britain which is bearing the brunt of the competition in this sector.

The EEC is growing increasingly conscious that Japan has not opened its markets to European exporters as expected under GATT arrangements.
