ront-end Winch for Land-Rovers k NEW front-end winch for use on the Land-Rover is being

produced by Mayflower. Automotive Products Ltd. 'Strongly anstructed, this winch is capable of pulling loads of up to ,500 lb. Mounted at the front end of the chassis, it is driven y steel shafts from the centre power take-oft. The winch is antrolled through the gearbox and clutch: a hand clutch is teed at the front end of the vehicle to disengage the winch ampletely from the drive to allow the drum to turn freely.. 'The winch drum is made in wrought steel and is Capable of tking flexible steel wire rope or nylon and steel rope of from -in, to Fin. diameter. A sheer-flange is incorporated in the inch and sheer pins of from 100 to 4,500 lb. shearing point re fitted, depending on the safe working load of the rope and ther tackle used. Should the sheer pins part, the winch will :main locked tinder load, when the pins are easily refitted.

Use of the vehicle clutch allows the load to be taken up noothly; a load can be " backed off" by engaging reverse rear. The makers state that fitting of the winch is comparatively isy—no additional parts or items are required.

lea.dlight Dimming Device

k.TOW available front accessory dealers is a new automatic headlight dimming device, called the Dimlight, made by laywood Phatocontrols Ltd. This allows vehicles to 1/SC immed headlights in well-lit streets when normal dipped beams re not required. The operation of this device conforms to le practice recommended by the Road Research Laboratory, le Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the .oyal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to differentiate etween parked and moving vehicles and to give a more ffective warning to pedestrians. Operation of the Dimlight is as follows: when sidelights id ignition ate both switched on dirnmed headlights autoiatically operate; if either sidelights or ignition is switched ff, or if main beam or normal dipped headlights are selected. ie Dimlight switches off automatically. Two models are available: a I2V unit (type no. 301) and 24V 'unit (type no. 307).

Latest Servis Speed Recorder.

ANEW.version of the Servis Speed Recorder made by Servis Recorders Ltd. is now available. This model, a chart recorder called the S.70.A.. records running time and speed and distance travelled of motor vehicles, Models are available for one-day and three-day duration.

A feature or the new model is that as it has no visible speedometer it can he fitted at any. convenient point in the vehicle cab. The recorder is operated by the normal speedometer drive cable, which when rotating acts upon two of the three styli tracing the exact speed and distance covered on a wax-covered, 6-in, circular chart. The third stylus is pendulumoperated and -shOws running and standing time independent of the mechanical drive.

The chart is driven by a clockwork movement; charts are easily read and can be changed very quickly. Whenever the recorder is opened and closed, a punch mark, is made in the chart which shows the exact time this occurred,

. •instrument is fitted with a Yale lock. -A wide range of accessories • is available to enable fitting to most vehicles having mechanical speedometer arrangements.

Additions to Double "A" Range AVARIETY. of new items has recently been added to the Double "A" range manufactured by A. Blackford and Son Ltd. Now available is the Plugomatic Mark II tubeless repair process. This is claimed to he an improved rubber plug type of repair—each plug is fitted with a self-inserting hard rubber tip, thus eliminating the need for any guide tool. This kit is available in two sizes: DA/100 contains 30 plugs, tools, and vulcanizing cement; DA/101 contains 55 plugs, toots, and vulcanizing cement. In addition there is a replacement kit, DA/102. which contains 25 plugs.

Also available are Vulc-Tile tyre repair sections for hot or cold application. The octagonal shape and fine feather edge are claimed to eliminate road thumping. The sections are available in six sizes for crown repairs and in four sizes for sidewall repairs--from nail-hole to 2 in, breaks.

Special moulded rubber tube repair units for hot or cold application have also been introduced; these are produced in 13 sizes—seven round and six oval.

Apart from these, three tyre repair items a range of high

speed steel twist drills in 21 sizes from -Ile in. to in. is also now available.

On Crane Fruehauf Trailers A WELL-PRODUCED booklet entitled "Crane Fruehauf 2-1 Trailers Put the World on Wheels has recently been published by Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd. It features a variety of CF trailers of from 40 to 250 tons, and illustrates how these have been used on particular applications, both at home and abroad. And reference is made to the possibility of linking together two 500-ton trailers to take a 1,000-ton load. Some technical details of the trailers are given and there are brief notes on the Crane Fruehauf automatic steering system and hydraulic suspension. The booklet is profusely illustrated.
