THE next two weeks will see the first I. exploratory meetings between repre sentatives of the Ministry of Labour and of the road transport industry on the setting up of one or more Industrial Training Boards for transport As reported last year in "The Commercial Motor ", there has not yet been a decision on whether separate boards should be established for passenger and goods transport, or some other division, or whether one board could adequately serve the whole industry. A decision on this may be expected by early February, and the establishment of the board(s) should take place this spring or summer.
Companies will have to pay a training levy, and those who operate approved training schemes will receive a grant (or a rebate on the levy, in effect).
At these first official meetings the Ministry representatives will, it is understood, put forward tentative proposals concerning the nature of the boards, for discussion.

Leyland Beavers for East Germany: Leyland Motors Ltd. has received an order from East Germany for 18 Beaver tractive units and special refrigerated Scammell semi-trailers to carry fresh pork over long distances from the German Democratic Republic to East and West European countries. Because of the distances involved the Beavers will be fitted with sleeping compartments M the specially lengthened cabs. The 36-ft. semitrailers will be fitted with bodywork by Smith's Delivery Vehicles Ltd., Gateshead, and will be the longest Scammell twin-axle units; overall length of the complete outfits will be 48 ft.
Talk on Crime Prevention: The Institute of Traffic Administration has arranged a talk on "Crime prevention and the road transport industry ", by Mr. J. T. Brown, chairman of the vehicles security committee of the Road Haulage Association, on January 19, at the Hotel Russell, London, W.1, starting at 7 p.m.
1.T.A. London Meeting: The London division of the Industrial Transport Association will meet at 6.30 p.m. on January 19 at the Royal Society of Arts, John Adam Street, London, W.C.2. A paper, "Terminal handling of mixed commodities ", will be read by Mr. H. F. Hawkins, managing director of Nicholls and Co. (Brighton) Ltd.
