A'application to carry schoolchildren on a weekly fares basic was made to the West Midland Traffic Commissioners by Glideaways Coaches, on Tuesday, after the firm had found that parents were being charged by a college for their • children's use of contract coaches.

Mr. J. Else, for the applicants, said that they had been carrying the children of Greenmore College, F-dgbaston, since 1952. It had lately been found that the college authorities had been adding an item to the parents' bills towards the cost.

Glideaways had not been aware of this illegality, and submitted the application as soon as it came to their notice. The principal and staff of the school were unaware that they had been doing wrong.

Birmingham Transport Department objected on the ground that existing stage services were adequate. Mr. H. Davis, senior traffic assistant, said that it was contrary to the department's policy to operate through gervices for schoolchildren. There were only three school services in the city,. and they were allowed to continue because they had been long established.

Mr. Else argued that the service was necessary because of the dangers to children when they travelled on their own, and the time it took them to reach school on ordinary buses.

Decision was reserved.
