A' 1958 A.E.C. Reliance coach with Willowbrook 41 seat bodywork, operated by the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd., has been modified to permit a top speed of over 60 m.p.h. Alterations made were similar to those on a Reliance of the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., described in The Commercial Motor on December 4, 1959. These were an increase in the governed engine speed to 2,200 r.p.m. and the fitting of a 4.08-to-1ratio rear axle.
Tested on Ml, the coach, which weighs 5 tons 191 cwt. unladen, achieved a maximum speed of 61 m.p,h.. It has triple-vacuum-servo braking, an exhaust brake, and was fitted with Michelin 9.00 20-in. X tyres. . _ . _
MINISTER SEES NEW YORK . MOTORISTS' FACILITY I N New York, U.S.A., on Monday, Mr.
Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport, saw a car park, on the opposite side of the river to the city, from which motorists are' taken into Manhattan by coach. The 'fare' is included in the parking fee. .
Mr. Marples, who is seeking American ideas on the solution of traffic problems, commented that the question of cohesion between public and private transport might be studied in Britain,
HERO AWARD FOR DRIVER --rHE driver of a burning. tar tanker, L who moved the vehicle to a safe distance from a hospital last September, was presented with the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust certificate by ClIr. John Kenyon, Lord Mayor of Nottingham, on Monday.
The driver, Mr. Alfred Goulder, Lammas Street, Nottingham, drove the tanker, which was in danger of exploding, away from the Whiltinghain Mental Hospital, near Preston.
LESS WORK, MORE BUSES
ASHORTER working week would increase peak-hour traffic, and in Manchester 10 per cent. more buses would be needed. This was stated on Monday by Mr. A.. F. Neal, general manager of Manchester Transport Department, at the celebration of the Bolton undertaking's diamond jubilee.
A.E.C. SERVICE CONSOLIDATED QERVICE and spare-parts facilties for A.E.C. operators have been consolidated in the Bristol area. The old spares depot has been closed, and in future a comprehensive service will be offered by Alma Garages (Bristol), Ltd.
New premises of this company, at 103 Victoria Street, Bristol, 1, will come into use on February 1.
ENDOF TYRE IMPORT DUTY? THE removal of,or a substantial reduction 'in, the import . duty on tyres is being sought by the Free Trade Union and Cobden Club. An application to the Board of Trade is tO be submitted early next month.
