RTRIKING tribute to the popularity

of the bus;compared with the train,. is contained in a report by Mr, R. Stuart Pilcher, -general manager of Manchester Corporation's transport

department. • . ,

He states that on a service to a football ground it was' necessary to stiPPlement the trams by buses. • The tram journey occupied 22' minutes, whereas the buses took only II minutes. Although there were not sufficient buses available to maintain the whole of the service, it was found that large numbers of passengers preferred to Wait for the bus, and would not travel by tram.

This extract is from a report in which Mr. Pilcker recommends that trams shOuld be replaced by buses on part of the Cheethain Hill Road-Bury Old .Road group of 'routes. • The -transport committee has approved the rePort,, which was considered on Wednesday by Manchester' City Connell. It is estimated that the change over will cost £50,400.'

Since Sinee 1930, Manchester Corporation has converted .16 tram services to bus operation,' with the result that last year the revenue from the buses totalled 47 per cent, of.. the undertaking's aggregate receipts. • IMPERIAL CO. ABSORBED.
