Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN our specification tables, published last week-, reference was made to two Thornycroft Sturdy tipping chassis. These are two varieties of a new model, further particulars of which are now available. Rated as a 31-5-tonner the type is correctly designated the Sturdy ZE/TC4 Tip. The two machines differ in respect of tyre equipment. One is shod with 32 by 6 and the other with 34 by 7 tyres.

In the first case, the recommended gross load (body weight plus pay-load) is 4 tons 10 cwt. and a tipping body of about 31 cubic-yds. capacity can be carried. With the larger tyres, a gross load of 5 tons 13 cwt. is permitted and the body may be of 4 cubic-yds. capacity.

The two chassis weigh respectively 391 cwt. and 414 cwt., and for operators who desire a machine within the 50-cwt. unladen-weight limit, a special lightweight end-tipping body is available.

Both machines have a 10-ft. wheelbase and forward control, and afford a body space of 9 ft. 9 ins. Their overall

814

lengths and widths are respectively 14 ft. 5 ins. and 6 ft. 7 ins. With 6-in. tyres, the height of the frame is 2 ft. 61, ins., whilst if 7-in. tyres be employed the height is 2 ft. 7 ins.

Incorporating straight 8-in, side channels, the frame is a sturdy structure and is strongly cross-braced. A four-cylindered 3.865-litre petrol engine, developing 60 b.h.p., forms the power unit, and the transmission system includes a single-plate clutch, a fourspeed gearbox. affording forward ratios of 1, 1.795, 3.14 and 6.41 to 1, and an overhead-worm rear axle, the final-drive ratios being 6.5 or 7.25 to 1 according to the tyre size.

Operated by a vacuum-servo cylin

der, brakes are provided on all four wheels. The front and rear shoes are 2i ins, wide and 41 ins. wide, respectively, whilst the drums are 16 ins, in diameter.

Cam-and-lever steering is used, the vehicle being capable of turning in a

45-ft. circle. A 20-gallon tank is mounted on the near side of the chassis and fuel is fed to the carburetter by vacuum and gravity.

Among the items of equipment listed as extras are an electric starter, a mechanical tyre pump, a power takeoff, a governor Thermostarter carburetter, tipping gear and Trafficators. The prices of the two chassis are. respectively £410 and £420.
