The ruling of the Appeal Tribunal, that there was no goodwill where a haulier sold out to a customer who gave him all his work, caused an application to be made for an additional vehicle, instead of for a " transfer under Section 11(3) (b), ata North-, Western Area inquiry in Mandiester; on Monday.

Soviet Lorry Production Soars.

According to the Monthly Review of the U.S.S.R. Trade Delegation in Great Britain, the output of lorries at the various factories in Soviet Russia during the nine months ended September last showed an increase of 57.6 per cent, over the figure for the corresponding nine months of 1935. During the same period the Russian output of tractors also increased, to the extent of 13.8 per cent.

New Five-mile Trunk Road.

The Minister of 'Transport has given his sanction to the construction of a trunk road, costing £400,000, which will overcome the need for traffic to pass through the borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme. It will take two years to build, will be five miles long, and have two 45-ft. carriageways.

Piston Temperatures in Oil Engines.

At a meeting to be held at the headquarters of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Storey's Gate, St. James's Park, London, S.W. on January 15, at 6;p.m., Mr. H. Wright Baker, D.Sc., A.M.I.Mech.E., will read a paper entitled "Piston Temperatures in a Sleeve-valve Oil Engine."

New Dennis Literature.

Two new leaflets have just been published by Dennis Bros., Ltd., Guildford. One deals with the Lancet single-deck chassis equipped with the new Dennis oil engine, whilst the other refers to the same model with the " big tour " petrol engine installed.

Also to hand is the first of a new series of eight instruction books dealing with the range of larger Dennis

vehicles. It is an excellent book, lucidly and comprehensively written, containing also a plenitude of illustrations. These are mainly drawings and sectional views, and in the majority of them practically every part is numbered, the numbers being listed against the names in the captions. Its price is 4s.
