The launch of the European Ambassador, P&,0 Irish Sea's new 123-truck-capacity ferry, was marked by a celebratory voyage earlier this month. Drivers travelling overnight from Liverpool to Dublin were offered free drinks to brighten the six-and-a-hair-hour voyage. Most accepted this hospitality in moderation. Not so, one hapless driver from a Cork-based International operator. He became so generously refreshed that no one could rouse him when the ship reached Dublin at 05.30hrs so his keys were located and his truck shifted out of the way. Fortunately, his employer is treating this as a "one-off' and no disciplinary action Is being taken—apart from the merciless ribbing which will dog him for a good while yet.
