• Railfreight Distribution expects its intermodal swap-body service to be operating from Harwich to Warrington by the spring.
The company will use up to 25 rail wagons which will each carry one or two swap bodies.
This follows its order for 45 low-line wagons from Powell Duffryn, to handle traffic through the new port at the Isle of Grain in Kent. The £3.5 million worth of equipment will carry six 2.7m containers, which could not previously run in Britain because UK tunnels are too narrow.
In preparation for the Channel Tunnel, up to 12 UK Railfreight depots will be opened by the summer of 1993.
