• Continental's revolutionary Energy Optimised Tyre has been withdrawn from the UK market, after being launched in a blaze of publicity only four years ago.
Brian O'Ready, Continental's marketing service manager, says the sNer axle version of the EOT tyre showed excellent wear characteristics, but the trailer tyre and the drive axle tyre offered a poor mileage performance against strong competition from longer wearing tyres such as Goodyear's successful G167.
The tyre featured a new type of belt design and was made from an elastic rubber compound to reduce rolling resistance by about 18%, producing average fuel savings of 5%.
Continental says it will continue to develop tyres using the EOT advances, and will aim for fuel consumption of 3-7%, as well as offering comparable distance and tyre wear to its competitors.
The company also believes that there has been a drop in diesel prices since EOT was launched, making fuel consumption less important to potential customers.
