II At an Institution of Mechanical Engineers emissions seminar last week (see page 6), John Needham, manager of Ricardo Engineering's diesel engine research department, described the features which the company believes the diesel of the future will require:
O variable geometry turbocharging with aftercoolings O high-pressure fuel injection equipment with electronic control O four-valve-per-cylinder combustion system with higher compression ratio O particulate trap or exhaust catalyst.
To minimise the production of particulates it will also be necessary to reduce oil consumption significantly and to utilise low-sulphur fuel, Needham told the conference.
Ricardo believes that the use of electronic fuel injection should give better cold-start characteristics, improved fuel economy and the possibility of integrated drivetrain management, while variable geometry turbocharging should enhance driveability.
