• Transport Minister Robert Atkins is about to modify the Operator Licensing system. This follows the consultative document last August on 0-Licensing, which included a proposal to introduce lifetime licences and a maintenance code of practice. See next week's issue for details.

No show

• Volvo and Foden will not exhibit at this year's British International Motor Show, to be held at the Birmingham NEC in September. Volvo says it has found other activities more effective; Foden has not participated since 1980.

Ban fines

• Old Street Magistrates fined CR Averre 2100 with 240 costs on 31 January after the company pleaded guilty to breaking the London Lorry Ban. Brent Magistrates fined W Scofield 240 with 225 costs and DL Chamberlain 250 with 225 in two other Lorry Ban prosecutions on 1 February.

Magazine deal

• Three magazine publishing groups have formed a consortium to negotiate with hauliers over the distribution of their titles. EMAP, BBC and Haymarket believe their BBC Frontline company will negotiate savings of 21 million over the next 18 months.

Beeston build-up

• Boots has added seven Leyland Daf Freighter 14.16s and a Roadrunner 8.13 to its 40-strong fleet in Beeston, Nottingham.

Toll standard

• A pan-European standard for electronic toll equipment is being researched by officials in Brussels.
