• Tankfreight's monopoly of Texaco's petrol retail distribution is set to be challenged as industry rumours mount that the NFC firm may lose the lucrative five-year contract which is up for renewal.
Industry sources say that Texaco is talking to other tanker firms, including rival TDG companies, and is seriously considering a return to the days of own-account transport. Texaco says: "We are in deep discussions with Tankfreight. But we are evaluating all the different options open to us. We have not ruled out any option."
Tankfreight won the multimillion-pound deal in August 1985 when Texaco decided to hive off its in-house transport operation, resulting in 570 redundancies and the closure of five storage locations.
