Refuse rides on SP811s

IT JUST goes to show what sponsorship can do. SP Tyres UK's involvement in the Supercrew competition, aimed at refuse vehicle crews over the past two years has resulted in an increase in demand of more than 100 per cent.

Its SP81L was introduced itf 1982. It is designed for shorthaul vehicles with an on/off road capability, and now

more than 5,000 units arc fitted as original equipment each year.

All Seddon Atkinson refuse vehicles and 90 per cent of Shelvoke and Dempster vehicles use 11R22.5 or 10R2/.5 sizes.

The tread incorporates two significant features — the overall proportions of the shoulder ribs have been increased to minimise shoulder wear, and the highly-angled groove sides of the stabilising tread ribs are said to improve abrasion resistance.

SP Tyres offers a full package of new, regroove and repro on all of its premium truck range. The Dunlop SP811 retreads are available as SP8 II repro on first-grade, first-life casings.

Tread law review

TRANSPORT Minister Peter Bottomley is to review on February 28 the effects of the tyre tread depth legislation, introduced in 1983, with interested bodies, including the motoring organisations Road Haulage Association, Freight Transport Association and National Tyre Distributors Association.

The law now requires a tread depth of imm across three quarters of the tyre width, with the remaining one quarter showing a visible tread pattern.

The NTDA will be among those pressing hard UM7c more for an increase. Having dropped its campaign for a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, as specified in some continental countries, its request for a mininnun 1rum across the whole width of the tyre is likely to he backed by road safety organisations.
