EEC Directive 85/210 equires member states to more that premium-grade nleaded petrol becomes vailahle by October 1, 1989 t the latest, although it can e introduced earlier, as it has !ready been in several other ountries.
The UK is the only EEC ',ember which has a national tandard for petrol sold to the mblic. To avoid confusion with the existing standard for 7onventional, leaded petrol BS 4040), British Standards nstitution has prepared an !ntirely new one for unleaded ietrol. It specifies maximum cad and benzene content and ninimum values for research cone number (RON) and notor octane number MON), both measures of the ner s anti-knock quality. The EEC directive does not pecify any particular octane ivality for the "regular;rade, but the BSI has
