rival claims of road and rail for deliveries of new ears from the factories in the Midlands into Cumberland were at issue last week at Penrith, Cumberland, when an application by Mr. A. Pickthall, of Cleator Moor, was partly granted by the Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. J. A, T. Hanlon.

Mr. Pickthall wanted to add a second car transporter to his B licence and to increase the radius of both.

The Licensing Authority refused to grant the addition of the second car transporter, but allowed the radius increase of the existing vehicle. He said: " The evidence of need for additional facilities is very slight and not sufficiently cogent to justify the addition of another of these great vehicles on the roads If traffic can go by rail, then it ought to do so, rather than inflict on the public who use the roads another of these very, very large vehicles. If all the traffic were taken off rail whieh could be done by road transport, no one would be able to use the roads at all."

The application was opposed by British Railways and Overland Car Deliveries, of Carlisle.

The licence conditions were widened to allow the applicant to collect new vehicles from factories at Limewoocl (Glasgow) and Birkenhead and carry to West 'Cumberland, within 40 miles as before, but refused to extend the delivery radius so that cars from Glasgow could be taken down to the Midlands, where the applicant already collected other cars for Cumberland. A further request for carriage of secondhand cars to auction sales in Glasgow was granted.
