PR1VATE road operators have lodged a petition against the Tamar Bridge Bill, protesting over the proposed tolls for goods vehicles and taxis, which they -say are " unreasonable and excessive" and are regarded as a deterrent to traffic. The petitioners wish the Bill to stipulate the holding of a public inquiry into the amounts of tolls to be charged.
The Bill came up for its second reading in the House of Commons on Tuesday, but this and other petitions have meant that it may be sent to the Opposed Bills Committee. Passage of the measure may be delayed, writes our political correspondent.
Approaches are being made to the Service Departments to do away with he Crown exemption clause under which Service vehicles would not be subject to tolls. It is thought that the departinents shouldcontribute to the cost of the bridge or pay tolls.
