RAIL PLANS MAY BE ARRESTED

THE railway modernization programme may be slowed down because of the oil shortage. Already in some areas the replacement of. steam locomotives by diesels is being postponed to conserve oil. The delay is only temporary and the long-term scheme is unaffected, writes our political correspondent.

Protests have reached Westminster from hauliers, particularly those in the north-east, where diesel locomotives came into service on the . CarlisleNewcastle upon Ty‘ne line on Monday. Mr. Rupert Speir (Cons., Hexhain) has suggested in questions to the Minister of Transport that the replacement of coal-burning locomotives by diesels should be postponed while the present emergency lasts.
