Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AFTER a wordy meeting lasting from 10.30 a.m. until nearly 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the Road Haulage Wages Council adjourned until February 25 consideration of the application of the employees' side for a large increase in wages.

Had the unions not asked for such great additions to the differential rates for drivers of the heavier 'vehicles, the matter might have been settled at once.

It appears that an increase in basic wages of 6s. a week was acceptable to both sides. The basic advance originally demanded by the unions was 8s.

In addition, the unions wanted an extra 5s. a week for drivers of yehicles of 1-5 tons, 9s. in the 5-8-ton class, 13s. in the 8-12-ton category, 17s. for drivers of 12-15-tonners, 21s. in the 15-18-ton class and 24s. over 18 tons. For drivers of vehicles over 45 tons the differential would be 26s. The employers would not agree to these advances.

It is understood that the question of a settlement of terms for an increase in the speed limit of heavy goods vehicles was not raised.
