IVIANY complaints about the services lnof Messrs. G. and B. Motor Services were made before Mr. S. W. Nelson, Northern Licensing Authority, last week, by witnesses who supported an application by Messrs. Lowes Bros., Trimdon, Co. Durham, to run workpeople's services from Wingate and Wheatley Hill to Spennymoor trading estate.
When he gave his decision, Mr. Nelson said: "The application by Lowes Bros. raises a point of principle. It is a matter of great importance as to whether a newcomer should be granted a licence, and if the existing operators were alive and on top of their job, no opportunity should ever be given to a newcomer to make an application.
"In this case, we have taken the line that .when the need is proved, we mnst givee-a newcomer the opportunity. Our decision in this case must not be regarded as a precedent, but the circumstances which have been brought to light in connection with the operation of C. and B. Services are so glaring that we propose to grant the application as applied for."
J. J. Baker, Ltd., and Gillett Bros. Motor Services, Ltd., joint operators of G. and B., and United Automobile Services, Ltd., appeared as objectors. Mr. Nelson said that the whole record of the facilities provided by G. and B. was "about the worst we have ever heard."
"In view of the need for increased production to assist the national effort," he added, " we feel that we are playing our part towards this by granting the service."
A condition was attached to Messrs. Lowes's licence that only employees of Ferguson Tractors, Ltd., and Siemens, Ltd., could be carried.
