Brief Details of a Short-wheelbase Machine for Use with Proprietary Semitrailers of 5-6 Tons Pay-load Capacity

THE latest addition to the range of Cub chassis, made

. by Leyland Motors, Ltd., Leyland, Lancs., is a model designed to form the tractive unit of an articulated sixwheeler. It is designated,as a petrol-engined machine, the KG4, but is also available with an oil engine, in which case the distinguishing name is the KG04.

In general layout, it closely resembles the Model SKG1, but, instead of baying forward control, the driving position is normal. It is classed, however, in the same series as the 1CG2 and the TKG2 21-tonners, but, whereas the wheeibases of these two models are 11 ft. 6 ins., the corresponding dimension of the new model is 10 ft. It differs in respect of weight, scaling2 tons 1 cwt., whilst the axle ratio is 7.5 to 1, instead of 6.5 to 1, and the tyres are heavy-duty 32-in. by 6-in. pneumatics.

As an articulated six-wheeler, the machine is described as a 5-6-tonner. The price, with a petrol engine, is £405, whilst with the Cub six-cylindered oil engine the figure is £555.

Apart from the reduction in length of the members affected, there are no alterations of importance in the chassis, but a number of improvements has recently been effected to the oil engine, mainly with a view to enhancing its liveliness. The connecting rods, which were previously composed of din-abut-fin, are now made of steel, with duralumin die-cast top-half bearings and steel-backed white-metal bearings in the big-end caps. '

Stelae inlet-valve seatings are used, the valves being shrouded, as in the past, whilst the diameter of the exhaust valves has been slightly reduced. The crankshaft no B20 longer has balance weights, the diameter of all journals has been increased to 2 ins., and the flywheel has been made sornewnat heavier.

Modifications to the lubrication system include the incorporation of a restricting valve in the feed to the overhead-valve gear, the provision of a better drainage arrangement from the head, and the employment of three breathers in the head cover to promote ventilation of the valve gear.

Although on the model illustrated, which is one of the first of the new chassis, the old-type metallic universal jcints are fitted, we understand that, in later models, needle-roller-bearing universals will be used. Certain of the other changes enumerated above will be embodied only in later models.

The petrol engine remains unaltered. Its bore and stroke dimensions are 31 ins. by 5 ins:, and its output 60 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.p.m. A Handy governor is included in the standard equipment.

In the case of both the oil-engined and petrol-engined models, the frame is of substantial construction. The sectional dimensions of the longitudinals at the deepest points are 61 ins. by 2/ ins. by .p in.. It is freely braced by cross-members, designed to afford the maximum strength

lot the minimum weight. •

Lockheed hydraulic brakes are applied by the .pedal, whilst the hand lever operates separate shoes in the rear drums by mechanical linkage and enclosed flexible • cables. Progressive springs are used at the rear, and the equipment is comprehensive.
