EUROPEAN and American manufacturers have agreed to co-operate formally to counteract the sale of counterfeit vehicle parts and accessories.
Representatives of the European Motor Parts Liaison Committee (Clepa) and the Motor Equipment Manufacturers Association of America (Mema) met recently in Washington DC and agreed to exchange information on known counterfeiters and to meet annually to review the problem.
A recent estimate puts the cost of counterfeiting to the European motor industry at about C100m a year.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says that the problem also goes deeper and can also cause loss of life and injury, as well as damage to the reputation of legitimate manufacturers.
The SMMT considers Taiwan to be one of the centres of manufacture of counterfeit motor vehicle parts.
