LEGISLATION on the quality of goods and on warranties has been tightened to protect the consumer, but those responsible for roads and bridges that crack up prematurly get away with it. A correspondent to The Daily Telegraph, replying to R. D. Yeomans, thinks it is time warranties were given on new highways and important bridges.
"The road builders, working to the specifications of local and national government officers, have no responsibility if their roads break up, structures crack and bridges become unsafe," he says. "The anonymous officers technically responsible for these hugely expensive problems, which cost millions in delays and repairs, remain securely employed and look forward with enthusiasm to the implementation of recommendations such as are made by Mr Yeomans."
Perhaps some other time he will explain who should pay for the repairs.
