IF JOHN EGAN knows as much about transport as he does about the life and works of James Joyce and about general affairs, current and past, he is the man to sort out London Transport.. He is a young Irish transport supervisor — a modest enough title — from County Clare and was top scorer in a Mastermind contest in Dublin. Among the very few questions that he was unable to answer correctly was one about a barmaid and another about a ladies' lavatory. His ignorance did him credit!
He is clearly not the Irishman who was asked the difference between a joist and a girder. "That's easy,he said. ."Joist wrote Ulysses and Girder wrote Faust.
