NEW HIGH-SPEED cross-Channel ferry services are being launched next month by Townsend Thoresen, and Sealink plans to follow next year, but some rates are going up. Townsend places the first of three new vessels — each capable of holding 60 12m trailers — into service in JanuaYy on the Dover-Calais crossing.

Each vessel will make three returns a day, with sailings every 90 minutes. There is a 75-minute sailing time for each leg, and one hour turnround time at each port.

According to Townsend thoresen chairman Keith Wickenden MP, the faster ailing time will mean a diference of between 70 and 80 niles on the road journey in '..'urope. The new vessels will ncrease TT capacity on the )over-Calais run by 50 per ent, against a total 20 per cent ncrease in capacity.

Sealink's St Anseim, the irst of two £16m 8200-ton feries for the same crossing, was lunched earlier this week at Iarland and Wolff's Belfast ard.

It holds up to 62 12m lorries n two decks, and is due to nter service in late May or lily June. Sailings will be ineased whenwhen the new vessels -rive, but a spokesman could not detail these when CM spoke to him this week.

But a Sealink spokesman did tell CM that 11 to 12 per cent rises will be applied to accompanied and unaccompanied freight on all Continental crossings next month and the rate for the Stranraer-Larne crossing will increase from £2.20 to £2.55 per foot.
