Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

STRIPES were flying verywhere in Class F of CM's ivery competition, the class for )assenger transport vehicles. _ike last year, this class atracted a large entry and well )ver 200 colour slides were subnitted.

But from these the judges inanimously declared a clear vinner, which was from leyfordian Travel of Upper leyford in Oxfordshire. This vas on a Van Hool body and he judges admired it for its trong, simple but original lesign in yellow, orange and ed "strobe" marks.

The use of the fleet name in uch bold style on both the ront and back was particularly ,raised. A novel and effective very.

A Leyland National singleecker bus was also highly ommended. This entry came .om Greater Glasgow PTE and onsisted of green and yellow ands on the lower part of a /hite body. The green hubs nd the continuation of the ellow band around the iheelarches were points that 'ere liked, overcoming the GG )go that the PTE has and thich was universally disliked y our judges.

Another entry deserving of lention came from BC Travel f Stoke-on-Trent and isplayed on an Alpha body. The judges thought the striking red, black and yellow scheme was strong and aggressive, reminding them of a children's comic. But the lettering on the boot lid was weak and out of character with the rest of the scheme. A "speech bubble" was suggested as an alternative for the rear lettering by the judges.

Dorset County Council e tered a scheme that is used foi Plaxton-bodied coach whic carries school children. TI Council asked the advice of ti police and came up with tl• yellow-and-black chevron pE tern for the front and back the vehicle. Definitely a goi idea from a safety point of vie, but the plain yellow and wh sides let it down slightly.

Overall, the judges thoug the standard of the entries w "reasonable", although ma lacked imagination. The Heyfc dian livery won partly becau of its originality. Upswe stripes were far too commc usually bearing no relation the shape of the body. Perha the major British bodybuild, should take some responsibil for this sudden bonanza stripes?

The judges pointed out ti operators who do want a rei attractive and professioi livery can contact the Des Council which can supply a of designers who do this typE work. It could be worth it.
