HESTAIR DENNIS has scored its biggest bus coup so far by winning a 144 vehicle order for South Yorkshire PTE doubledeckers.

SYPTE controller of engineering and building services Bill Kirkland told CM this week that 144 Dominator chassis have been ordered, all with Gardner 6LXB engines and Voith D851 gearboxes.

Ninety-four will have Walter Alexander bodies, the rest Willowbrook. All will be finished to SYPTE specification and include aluminium alloy framing.

Mr Kirkland said that the decision to change to Dennis was based upon operating experience, and added that the Dominator came closest to its design requirements. A small trial fleet of Dominators has given excellent service.

The decision to buy from Willowbrook follows an earlier order for 60 steel bodies on Leyland Atlantean AN68s SYPTE wants to gain ex. perience with the manufac. turer's alloy version.
