THE PEELER document was bound to convey the impression that any inquiry into heavier lorries, far from being impartial and objective, could• be cynically manipulated, complained an MP last week.
As it was in everyone's interest that the public accepted such inquiries as impartial and objective, the Transport Minister now had an obligation to• take some steps to restore public confidence, suggested the MP, Roger Moate (Tory, Faversham).
Mr Rodgers replied that it was very difficult to deal with a statement that there had been a loss of public confidence.
He agreed that there had been some disquiet, and he greatly regretted that circumstances did not allow him to explain in more detail how these matters fell out.
However, the proposal for an inquiry was his, and it was the task of his officials to advise him as they saw fit.
He had no doubt at all about the integrity of the official himself, and greatly regretted that he had been the subject of some unfair criticism.
