THE LIGHTER semi-trailer ranges of the York Trailer Co. Ltd., have been completely revised to anticipate a possible emphasis in Britain on 16-ton-gross weights. The recent White Paper on Freight proposes a licensing system that draws a distinction between vehicles over 16 tons gross and those below this weight, the latter getting a lot of extra freedom as compared with the heavy units.
York feels that this will change the pattern of artic use and the new models are designed for operation at 16-tons-gross train weight and include platform, step-frame, drop-frame and Freightmaster van types. All will be plated for a gross trailer weight of 13 tons; weights are around 2 tons lOcwt to 2 tons 15cwt, so allowing payloads of between 10.25 and 10.5 tons.
Suitable tractive units for the semi-trailers are the Bedford KFA which weighs 2.75 toi unladen, BMC FFK300 models weighing 2.65 torts and the Ford D600 which weighs 2.85 tons. These tractive units are offered for 15or 16-tons-gross operation and chassis designed for slightly higher weights such as the Commer VC12 which weighs around 3 tons unladen will also be suitable for use with the new York models if worked below their maximum gross figure.
All models have 8.25-20, 12-ply tyre and wheel equipment to match up with those fitted on the appropriate tractors. Lengths go from 26ft up to 34ft in the case of fifthwheel models and up to 30ft on automaticcoupling designs. Brakes on fifth-wheel semitrailers are three-line air with York 15.5in. by 7in. S-cam brake units, while on the automatics, Girling 15.5in. by 6in, wedge brakes are operated by a two-line service system with a mechanical linkage through the coupling for secondary braking.
With fifth-wheel coupling, list price of the minimum-length fiat-platform model is £954 and for the semi-drop frame and the fulldrop frame designs it is £976; in all three cases there is a reduction of £28 when automatic coupling is specified.
List prices of the Freightmaster van versions at minimum length start at £1,744 with flat deck and fifth-wheel coupling. The automatic-coupling version of this costs £1,824 while comparable prices for semi-drop deck and full-drop deck versions are £2,064 and £2,104 and £2,153 and £2,233 respectively.
