AVERSION of the Big J lift-wheelbase six-wheeled chassis developed specifically to meet the requirements of the ready-mixed concrete industry has been introduced by Guy Motors Ltd. Plated to operate at 20tons-gross, this new chassis can carry a mixer and payload of 14.5 tons, chassis/cab weight at about 5.5 tons being in the region of 0.5 tons lighter than the comparable existing

model.

Weight saving has been achieved by a combination of factors. Front axle and springs have a 5-ton rating and the rear bogie and suspension is designed for a 15-ton capacity.

Standard tyres for the rear bogie are 18-19.5, 16-ply tubeless low-profile singles although twin rear tyre equipment is available as an alternative. Among other weightsaving features is the fitting of a 25ga1 fuel tank instead of the normal 46 gal size.

Standard engine in the chassis is an AEC AV505 149 bhp diesel, the drive being through an ENV constant-mesh gearbox— a five-speed as standard and a six-speed overdrive as an option. The Kirkstall doubledrive rear axles have a lockable third differential and the standard ratio is 6.75 to 1; options are 5.97, 7.18 and 8.15 to 1.

Cam-operated air-pressure brakes are employed with Westinghouse spring-brake actuators for parking and power-assisted steering is an option. Twin towing eyes are fitted at front and rear of the frame and if a heavy-duty bumper bar is specified a towing/ shunting jaw can be supplied.
