Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MAJOR CHANGES in freight container standards, which follow agreements reached within the technical committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), have brought about a revision of BS3951 and the publication of a new British Standard on corner fittings.

The changes in the revision of BS3951 on Freight Containers relate to the requirement that the corner fittings for containers shall be in compliance with the new BS4228, and the operational and test requirements. Details of operational requirements for handling containers by means of fork-lift trucks, straddle carriers and similar equipment are now included.

Standardization of the internal dimensions of freight containers is currently being studied both nationally and internationally, and this aspect is not yet covered by BS3951.

BS4228—Corner Fitting for Freight Containers—standardizes a key component for large freight containers as speci

fied in BS3951 and provides for compatibility between the containers and associated handling, locating and securing equipment for road, rail and sea transport. Care has been taken to limit standardization to that essential for such compatibility, and account as been taken of automatic, semi-automatic and conventional handling methods.

The standard specifies certain dimensional features of corner fittings for containers A, B, C and D of BS3951, and covers the thicknesses of walls, details of apertures and minimum sizes of internal cavities.

The standards may be obtained from the BSI Sales Office, 101/113 Bentonville Road, London, NI , price lOs for BS3951, and 12s for BS4228.
