Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE long-awaited British Standard on diesel engine ratings has now been published as an SMMT data sheet. It specifies the standard conditions for the test bed procedure, the components to be included on the engine for standard tests at the approved engine-power outputs and the smoke density of the exhaust gases.

One of the more important aspects of the Standard—BS AU 141:1967—is the setting of an exhaust-smoke limit at maximum output. The Standard goes into a good deal of detail on this subject and relates the acceptable upper limit of smoke density to the carbon concentration and the nominal gas flow.
