S forecast in The Commercial Motor of November 3, the Bedford

330-cu.-in. (5.42-litre) diesel engine which, it was reported in that

was to be fitted in SB passenger chassis, is now available for le Bedford 7and 71-ton goods models and 10and 12-ton tractive nits as an alternative to the 330-cu.-in. (4.93-litre) diesel engine. It as also been announced by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., that a new fourilindered 220-cu.-in. (3.61-litre) diesel engine is available for Bedford and 4-ton, normaland forward-control goods models as an alternave to the 200-cu.-in. (3.28-litre) unit.

The 330and 220-cu.-in. engines are basically the same as the )0and 200-cu.-in. units respectively. The 10 per cent. 'increase in .splacement is the result of fitting Laystall Cromard thin-wall cylinder ners and an increase in bore diameter from 3i in. to 4* in. in tell case. Larger diameter, shorter cylinder-head studs are used. In the case of the 330-cu.-in, engine, maximum net power 99 b.h.p. at 2,600 r.p.m. and maximum net torque is 234 1:-ft. at 1,800 r.p.m. compared with 89 b.h.p. at 2,600 r.p.m. id'210 lb.-ft. at 1,400 for the 300-cu.-in. unit. Maximum net .ttput of the 220-cu.-in. engine is 65 b.h.p. at 2,600 r.p.m. id maximum net torque is 153 lb.-ft. at 1.400 r.p.m. compared ith 57 b.h.p. at 2,600 and 139 lb.-ft. at 1,400 r.p.m. for the )0-cu.-in. unit.

With the introduction of the 300-cu.-in, engine, which will :come standard equipment if it is specified in the majority E orders for the six-cylinder diesel engine, 71-ton goods models id 12-ton tractive units can be obtained for the first time with a Bedford-built diesel engine. Where fitted with the 330-cu.-in, engine the 71-ton long-wheelbase chassis-cab will cost £1,255 and the 12-ton tractive unit will be £1,260. Chassis with the new 220-cu.-in, engine will be priced at £7 more than the comparable chassis with the 200-cu.-in. unit. The prices quoted refer to vehicles sold on the United Kingdom market. On 12-ton tractive units, fitted with the 330-cu.-in, engine, the Bedford two-speed axle will continue to be used.

Vehicle weights in taxation condition are unaltered when the larger engines are fitted.
