THE increase of 74 per cent. in haulage rates recommended by the Road Haulage Association was the minimum required to cover rises in costs, many of which had taken place several months ago, said the association's chairman, Mr. J. B. Mitchell, last Saturday.
Mr. Mitchell said the rates that will apply as from the beginning of 1962 were no more than two and a half times as much as the corresponding charges before the war and in many cases the rise had been considerably less.
"If fair and reasonable rates are not charged it no longer becomes possible to keep up the standard of service, so that any advantage the customer may think he has gained is very short-lived indeed."
