THE Scottish Council for Develop ment and Industry has appointed a joint committee to consider the special transport problems of the Highlands and Islands. Its first task will be to study the draft charges scheme of the British Transport Commission, and to review the operation of transport services in Scotland since nationalization.
A report of another joint committee concerning the Highlands has been accepted by the Council. In this it was stated that for the sake of the existing population and for the re-development of the area, roads. bridges and piers had to be improved. Transport charges should be tapered over longer distances, present scales being an obstacle to industrial activity, and economic and social progress.
