testers, and is still capable of doing a good day's work. But like a middleaged aunt who still insists on going clubbing, the Transporter is starting to look out of place in more youthful company. It equals the new Toyota engine for peak power output, although loses 20Nm of torque, but none of the vans here can equal the glorious sound of those five cylinders working hard.
Payload is top of the bunch, but the driver is less well accommodated. Everyone criticised the driving position, and the slab-like dashboard not only looks dated but is not over-generous in Its storage provision. The VW tied with the Toyota for the quality of Its build, and it was said that if you had to have an accident, the Transporter was the one to have it in.
The criticism aimed at the VW, and the Merc, is probably a natural consequence of pitching vehicles at the far end of their life-cycle against ones
which were still on the drawing board two years ago. If we repeat this test next year, we might expect a different story.
