Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Craig Sheer MAN has revealed that it intends to make a complete shift to Bosch common-rail fuelling for its truck diesel engines within the next three years. Common rail technology will make its first appearance on the 12.8 litre D28 inline six cylinder, uprated to 530hp, in the fourth quarter of this year followed by the introduction of a 480hp version in the second quarter of 2003.

These will replace the existing 510 and 460 versions at Euro 3, giving an increase in power and raising the torque to 2,400Nm on the highest rated engine, up 100Nm from the existing 510hp model; while the 480hp engine gains 200Nm over its 460hp predecessor.

The manufacturer has also announced several new developments for its TG-A range, including a new retarder and a heavy haulage tractor based around its V10 power plant.

The new PriTarder engine brake system has been jointly developed by MAN and Voith and combines the crankshaft driven water pump with a side-mounted retarder unit. Water from the coolant sys tern is directed onto the PriTarder's turbine blades when actuated, providing up to 600kW of retardation. MAN says the system works most efficiently at vehicle speeds up to 50kph and claims that a 60kg weight saving is one of the PriTarder's advantages when compared with a conventional secondary retarder.

For heavy-haulage operations MAN has integrated its 18.3 litre V10 motor within a heavy duty TG-A chassis, which will be available in 650hp form at Euro 3 emissions rating. The 250 tonne four-axle unit boasts 2,700Nm of torque which reaches the road via a torque converter combined with a TipMatic manual/autoshift transmission. MAN says that its new heavy hauler will become available this autumn.

Further enhancements to the TG-A range include a higher spec interior with walnut and leather trim, plus integrated hifi and navigation systems and a range of safety aids including Lane Guard, Adaptive Cruise Control, and an Electronic Stability Program.
