MI Truck manufacturers are hanging their hopes on a J-reg boost in August sales following another dismal set of registration figures for July. According to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, truck and artic registrations were more than 35% down on July last year. The decline is bottoming out, but slowly. The month on month fall was 34% in June and 37% in May. However, truck dealers are pessimistic about the prospect of a J-reg surge.
"It's the flattest August for CVs since the Second World War," says Frank Maycock of Haydock Commercials, the Scania dealer chairman.
Richard Lodge, of Kays, Dewsbury, Seddon Atkinson's dealer chairman, is more sanguine: "I don't think commer cial vehicle operators are influenced by new registrations."
Neil Renshaw, sales and marketing manager at Sherwood Leyland Daf in Derby, agrees: "We are not affected like the car industry. We have had a fair number of sales."
