Regulation 6(8) of the Transit of Animals (Road and Rail) Order 1975 says that a vehicle used for the carriage of animals must have artificial lighting, fixed or portable, to adequately illuminate the interior.
This means that the trailer could be fitted with lights to operate from the drawing vehicle or you could hang a battery-powered lamp, Exemptions from some of the animal transport regulations are given to small trailers, but the lighting requirement is not one of them.
