DETAILS of the conference, "The Container and the User", to be held at Earls Court on September 23 and 24 in conjunction with the International Freight Container and Container Handling Exhibition, September 22-26 (CM April 11). have been issued by the organizers, Independent Trade Missions Ltd., 25 Queen Anne's Gate, London SW1.

The conference will be opened by Mr. Anthony Wedgwood Benn, Minister of Technology; the chairmen of the two-day session will be Mr. R. B. Stoker. chairman, Manchester Liners Ltd., and Mr. J. D. M. Hearth, joint ventures director, the Cunard Steam-Ship Co. Ltd. Subjects covered by speakers will include: future trends in handling of containers; the effect of containerization on particular industries—wool and refrigerated goods: consolidated loads; an examination of the problems facing the forwarder and the customer; standardization—the swing away from the ISO recommendations; container pooling on a world-wide basis; documentation; container insurance problems; computer systems to help containerization; labour problems; and container handling.

In addition to the conference, technical studies will be carried out on site at the Air Cargo Terminal at London Airport. Gladstone Container Terminal, the new Seaforth Terminal at Liverpool docks and the Transatlantic Container Terminal and Transport Ferry Terminals at Felixstowe.

Extended lunch periods on the two conference days will enable delegates to visit the exhibition which has attracted over 70 major container equipment manufacturers and ancillary services. The exhibition is organized jointly by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and lliffe Exhibitions and is sponsored by Freight Management and associated journal Mechanical Handling.

New container services

TWO NEW regular container services from Antwerp have started recently. Neptune Orient Lines opened its service to the Far East (Penang, Port Swettenham, Singapore and Hong Kong) on July 10 and on July 23 the Universal Shipping Corporation started its round trip service to Boston.

Transatlantic visit

A TWO-WEEK technical study tour (September 6-20) of the U.S. and Canada, organized by our associated journal Freight Management in conjunction with its associated American journal Traffic Management, will include visits to the Maryland Port Authority, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the New York Port Authority and container facilities at Port Elizabeth, Port Newark and Staten Island.

Three days of the tour are , set aside for delegates to attend the International Shipping, Containerization and Marine Engineering Exposition and Congress (September 15-18) in New York.

Four ships for OCL

ORDERS for four new containerships have been placed with shipbuilders in Hamburg by Overseas Containers Ltd.

The twin-screw vessels will each carry 1,800 20ft containers and will be capable of 26 knots. Delivery of the first vessel is expected in the latter part of 1971 and the others by mid-1972.

THIS WEEK the Peterborough Engineering Co. Ltd. announces that its Pengco Load-O-Matic demountable bodies are now available in flat skeletal form with corner locks to pick up standard ISO containers.

These demountable skeletals come complete with retractable legs so that they can be deposited at any convenient place, independent of separate lifting facilities.

As skeletal frames with ISO corner fixings the Load-O-Matic 20ft demountables weigh only 18cwt. A 30ft long model is also available.
